Lepakshi Veerbhadra Swamy (Lord Shiva) Temple, Anantapur District

Lepakshi is a village in the Anantapur District of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located 15 km east of Hindupur and approximately 120 km north of Bangalore. Its almost 110 km from Anantpur town.

History

Temple was built in 1530 during the Vijayanagar Empire, According to skanda puran its an important pilgrimage of lord shiva. Lepakshi has significance in Ramayana also, it is said that Jataayu (vulture) fought fiercly with Ravana to save Sita, Ravana used his sword and attacked on his feathers and injured him. While he was taking his last breath Lord Rama arrived in search of Sita and he narrated the entire story, Jataayu got moksha on Lord Rama's lap.

  • Veerbhadra Swamy Temple :- Temple is huge and internal sculpture is very attractive, you can see various idols posing and can see elephants also, there are shivlings in few places  inside the temple premises, there is big shivling under the naag hood and a very big ganesha statue.


  • You can see the footprint of maa Sita there

  • Hanging Pillar :- Hanging pillar is the very important mystery of the temple architecture, it is said that some of the British engineers tried to investigate the same and while trying to hit the hanging pillar they noticed that other pillars also started getting cracks, they then left the premises.
  • Nandi Bull :- While coming from higway and before entering the temple premises you will notice a large Bull sculpture on the right side.
